This story is based on actual events and people who took part in the Battle of Stalingrad during the Second World War. The teenage snipers of Stalingrad were a legend in their time and before writing this book James Riordan made several interviews with some of them. The main character is an ordinary teenager when the Germans approach Stalingrad. The bombing starts and everybody has to do their part. Learning to use a rifle and shoot at Germans is at first a moral dilemma but soon the hatred takes over. The will to survive drives the sniper through six months of siege, losing both friends and family members. After the first chapter I was caught in this exciting action. I couldn’t stop reading because I had to find out what would happen next. I strongly recommend this book.
